The Little Electric Ford Explorer Unveiled in One Month

Although following the Mustang Mach-E, the next Ford electric SUV sports a style reminiscent of a small Explorer, and is scheduled for release the day after spring 2023. 

Cautious, Ford was groping in the dark when it came to electric vehicles. However, the automaker must rely on rapidly transitioning its lineup to comply with the ban on the sale of thermal cars in 2035 in Europe. It plans to convert its range by 2030, by reducing the number of models.

However, after launching the Mustang Mach-E in 2020, the brand did not invest enough in proprietary technology and thus sought support from Volkswagen. Its next model is therefore still a Ford, but based on the German group’s platform. 

A mini-electric Ford Explorer?

The MEB platform of the future SUV is thus shared with its Volkswagen ID.4 counterpart. Currently in its final development phase, the vehicle is visible in testing camouflage in its final form. Scoop hunters have caught it several times near Ford’s European center in Cologne (Germany).

We discover that it is not the Mustang Mach-E that inspired the designers, but the larger SUV Explorer. Much more “boxy” and more akin to the hybrid Kuga, it is Ford’s vehicle for renewal in Europe. The company wants to showcase its American roots with a more upscale style, close to that of the Explorer.

Presentation on March 21

On Twitter, Ford Europe’s director, Martin Sanders, posted a teaser video showing a fragment of bodywork. Honestly, not much is visible apart from a wheel. It’s a pretext to launch the hashtag “#ExploringReinvented”.

Clearly, the leader is giving a subtle nod to the Ford Explorer. And it is also an opportunity to announce the date of the unveiling. The Ford electric SUV will be fully revealed on March 21.
