2023 Hyundai Kona Electric: Approaching 500 km Range

The second generation of the Hyundai Kona finally reveals its range of engines and batteries, with increased autonomy compared to the previous model.

The second generation of the SUV wants to keep us guessing. The Hyundai Kona 2023 has been gradually unveiling its features over the past few months. But at last, it clarifies its core functioning, its battery.

A choice between two batteries

Previously, the Hyundai Kona offered a dual choice: 39 or 64 kWh. This had an advantage, allowing buyers to select a model close to their needs and budget. However, the Kia Niro EV, using the same platform as the Kona, demonstrated a new strategy with a single large battery.

Hyundai does not copy this decision and again offers two batteries: 48.4 kWh in “Standard Range” and 65.4 kWh in “Long Range.” Thus, the maximum range of the new electric SUV would be 490 km in the WLTP theoretical cycle. A slight increase compared to the outgoing model, which claimed up to 484 km. Additionally, dimension increases are to be considered, with nearly 15 cm more in length.

Up to 490 km of range

As for recharging, it will be bidirectional, like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 6. Through two ports on the center console or the exterior port, it delivers up to 3.13 kW of power. Hyundai does not specify a maximum charging power, but 10% to 80% would take about 41 minutes.

Another piece of information, the motor differs depending on the model, with 115 kW (156 hp) for the smaller battery, and 160 kW (218 hp) for the larger one. This is also an improvement over the previous version, which only offered 100 and 150 kW. The torque remains the same for both Hyundai Kona electric models: 255 Nm.
