The Ford Puma ST features a hybrid engine

Ford has just announced the arrival of a new hybrid version of the Puma ST. It abandons the 200 hp manual transmission of the ST for an automatic 7-speed transmission.

200 hp, no hybridization, and a manual gearbox: the Puma ST stands out as a rebel in the city SUV market. It finally moderates a bit, with a new hybrid and automatic version.

While it doesn’t fully live up to its hybrid label, the Puma ST still offers basic hybrid features, with a light 48-volt system that doesn’t fundamentally change the game’s consumption and CO2 emissions. The electric component mainly adds some extra boost to the petrol engine, without compromising efficiency. “We use the 48-volt mild hybrid technology not only to improve performance but also to increase maximum power and torque,” Ford acknowledges.

A hybrid Puma ST, but still a player

Officially named Puma ST Powershift, this new hybrid version of the small SUV hides a 1.0-liter three-cylinder petrol under its hood. Thanks to the 48-volt system and recalibration, the engine’s power increases from 155 to 170 hp, with torque reaching 248 Nm. Fuel consumption is measured at 6.3 liters/100 km, and CO2 emissions at 144 g/km. In terms of performance, Ford announces a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in 7.4 seconds (+ 0.7 seconds compared to the 200 hp ST).

The manual gearbox of the non-hybrid Puma ST is replaced here by a 7-speed automatic transmission. If desired, the driver can manually change gears using the steering wheel paddles. Ford claims to have taken steps so that the system maintains “the hybrid system at optimal engine speed” in standard automatic mode, to limit vehicle consumption. The active exhaust valve system has been retained to give the car a bit more voice in Sport mode. The chassis settings specific to the ST have also been preserved. Even with these adjustments, the Puma ST Powershift should still possess a bit of its characteristic soul.
