Within Mitsubishi’s near-term plans, a compact electric car and an electric SUV will complete the lineup, with the plug-in hybrid Outlander arriving as early as 2024.
The Japanese automaker has just unveiled its short- and medium-term plan, following those of Nissan and Renault, its partners within the Alliance. Mitsubishi is considering launching 16 new models worldwide over the next five years, including nine electrified vehicles.
A Cousin of the Renault 5 and Micra Electric?
Among the nine models, it is understood that they include hybrid, electric, and plug-in hybrid technologies. Three of them will be 100% electric, including a “kei car,” a type of mini Japanese city car, which is not expected to be sold in Europe.
However, a small electric car is visible in the official presentation, hidden under a cover but roughly the size of the upcoming Mitsubishi Colt hybrid. Logically, this electric city car with the three diamonds should share the CMF-BEV platform of the future Renault 5 (2024) and Nissan Micra (2026). The name Mitsubishi Mirage could be a candidate, along with production in France alongside its cousins. Not listed in the 2023-2025 schedule, it is expected to launch at the earliest in 2026.
Even more mysterious is a second, larger electric model, likely a compact or family SUV. Again, it would probably share the Alliance’s platform, specifically the CMF-EV of the Renault Scenic Electric and Nissan Ariya. As for the electric pickup truck, it is uncertain whether it will reach European roads.
Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In Hybrid SUV in 2024
Following the recent ASX based on the Renault Captur and the new Colt – a revamped Clio – arriving this fall, a third hybrid model has been confirmed. The second-generation Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will arrive in Europe and France in 2024. This large SUV, measuring 4.70 meters and launched outside Europe in 2021, offers 7 seats. The Outlander PHEV features a dual petrol-electric motor outputting 170 hp, with a 20 kWh battery allowing up to 84 km of electric range. It aims to compete with the Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe, among the few 7-seat rechargeable hybrid SUVs on the market.
Finally, Mitsubishi has two other hybrid vehicles in development, a 5-seat SUV arriving at the end of 2024, and a minivan, but no details have been announced yet.
