The Interministerial National Road Safety Observatory (ONISR) published its 2022 report on road safety today.

The government, through the Interministerial National Road Safety Observatory (ONISR), releases today its official report on road safety in 2022. The report notably notes a significant increase in fatalities involving bicycles and electric personal mobility devices (EPDM), as well as a decrease in car-related deaths.

As a result, over 3,267 people died on the roads last year, which is 23 more than in 2019. Additionally, 236,834 individuals were injured in accidents last year, including 15,956 seriously injured.

The report on road safety also indicates that men are both the most likely to be responsible for (84%) and victims of (78%) traffic accidents. Furthermore, ONISR cites speed (28%) and alcohol (23%) as the two main factors contributing to road accidents in 2022.

According to Road Safety, the number of fatalities on the roads in 2022 reached the figures of 2019, the reference year for the 2022 report. It also breaks down the figures into six categories of transportation modes: cars, motorized two-wheelers, bicycles, EPDM, pedestrians, and heavy vehicles.

Conclusions of the 2022 Road Safety Report

Last year, there were fewer deaths in car and motorized two-wheeler accidents and more deaths involving bicycles and EPDMs. This correlates with the diversification of soft mobility options offered in recent years and the progressive restrictions on car traffic in city centers.

The following table details the estimated accident rates based on the different modes of transportation recorded by ONISR:

Number of deaths
(compared to 2019)
Number of serious injuries
(compared to 2019)
Car1,565 (-57)4,807 (-366)
Motorized two-wheelers718 (-31)5,300
Bicycle245 (+58)2,628 (+314)
EPDM35 (+25)604 (+446)
Pedestrian488 (+5)2,000
Heavy trucks and utility vehicles152 (+18)Not specified

Regarding the population, drivers aged 18 to 24 experience the highest accident rates in cars. Last year, 549 people in this age group died, and 2,739 were seriously injured.

In addition to speed and alcohol, Road Safety highlights four other risky behaviors that contribute to accidents. In third place, jointly, are drug use and inattention (13%). Then, fainting accounts for 10% of accidents. Finally, 9% of accidents are caused by refusal to yield.

In overseas territories, the 2022 report indicates higher road death rates. Last year, 283 people died on the roads, of whom 82% were men. They are also responsible for 87% of road accidents.

Reducing road fatalities remains a priority for the government, as does education and prevention efforts on the roads. Measures such as 30 km/h city speed limits (Rennes, Toulouse) or bike lanes help prevent accidents, but will they be enough to lower road accident rates?
