Will there soon be a surcharge for electric and hybrid vehicles?

The Minister Delegate for Transport, Clément Beaune, spoke about a potential tax on electric vehicles. It will focus on the weight of the vehicle, as is currently the case with thermal vehicles.

On Europe 1, Clément Beaune discussed a possible taxation on electric and hybrid vehicles based on vehicle weight. A measure that will be reinforced for thermal vehicles.

Who is affected by this penalty?

For now, only internal combustion engine vehicles are affected by this measure. Be careful, there are still conditions. Your vehicle must be for private use and weigh more than 1800 kg. From there, the penalty becomes substantial. Each kilogram beyond the limit will cost 10 euros. However, this penalty has a cap of 50,000 euros.

The office of the Minister Delegate for Transport reminds that only 2% of new vehicles are affected by this penalty. A threshold that could be lowered in the 2024 government budget.

The advent of electric vehicles

The presence of electric cars is only increasing in France. At the end of 2022, approximately 650,000 EVs were estimated to be on the road.

For electric vehicles, a “debate” is underway to implement the tax.

Clément Beaune explained that electric vehicles could face stricter criteria.

“The criteria will be stricter because the electric market will allow […] the production of more affordable, lighter vehicles.”

This tax could be introduced before 2025. Hybrid vehicles will also be affected by this tax.
