Réunion, France’s champion in carpooling

The Paris region, Normandy, and Pays-de-la-Loire are the regions with the highest number of carpooling trips. However, they do not have the highest carpooling to population ratio.

According to data from the National Daily Carpooling Observatory, there were 748,259 carpools made in May 2023. A decrease of 4.5% compared to April, with 782,892 trips shared. For Réunion, the number is steadily increasing.

26,558 trips in May

Carpooling has begun to democratize well across the entire country, including overseas territories. Île-de-France saw 203,155 trips made, with a population of 12,358,932 according to INSEE figures as of January 1, 2023. For comparison, Réunion, ranked first, has 26,558 carpoolings for 873,102 residents, also according to INSEE as of January 1, 2023.

Why is Réunion ranked first?

You might be wondering why Réunion is first, while Normandy, Pays-de-la-Loire, and Île-de-France are ahead in total trips. As mentioned earlier, the ranking is based on the number of carpools relative to the region’s population.

In this case, Réunion clearly dominates this ranking with 304.2 trips per 10,000 inhabitants. The Paris region is only 4th, with 164.4 trips for the same number of residents.

In March 2023, France experienced over 1,000,000 carpool trips for the first time in a month. The country is now on a downward trend, with a drop of 300,000 trips over three months.
