MINI Confronts Its Electric Destiny

MINI is on its way to full electrification of its range and will showcase two new models at the Munich Motor Show (September 5 – 10, 2023).

The IAA (International Motor Show) in Munich, open from September 5 to 10, 2023, will serve as the backdrop for the presentation of the fifth generation of the MINI Cooper and the new MINI Countryman.

MINI Cooper Reinvents Itself as an Electric.

The brand’s core will now be embodied by the 3-door MINI Cooper, which is now 100% electric, available in two variants: Cooper E and Cooper SE, and still openly dedicated to the joys of urban driving. The term “Cooper” is no longer used as a motorization designation but now refers to all MINI 3- and 5-door models, as well as the MINI Cabrio.

The electric motor of 184 hp (135 kW) in the Cooper E offers a torque of 290 Nm and allows the compact car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds. With a power of 218 hp (160 kW), the Cooper SE completes the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 6.7 seconds with a maximum torque of 330 Nm. The WLTP electric range is announced at 305 kilometers for the Cooper E and 402 kilometers for the Cooper SE. These figures are perfectly in line with its urban vocation.

New MINI Countryman, an urban adventurer.

Taller and longer, with six centimeters more in height and thirteen centimeters more in length, the new MINI Countryman is becoming more refined. More space for passengers, but a size that increasingly distances it from any hypothetical off-road use. But after all, how many SUVs can today handle anything other than asphalt? The Countryman is growing, but paradoxically, its line is slimming down.

Two powertrains are available with 204 hp (150 kW) for the Countryman E and 313 hp (230 kW) and all-wheel drive for the Countryman SE ALL4. The WLTP electric range is announced at 462 kilometers for the Countryman E and 433 kilometers for the Countryman SE ALL4.

Inside both models, nostalgia for the Mini Classic will find familiar details with a minimalist dashboard and the now-famous central OLED screen of 240 millimeters diameter. Leather upholstery incorporates synthetic elements, while all textiles, stitching, and the dashboard surface are made from recycled materials. Living with the times is essential, even when inheriting an icon. Notably, a surprising new two-spoke multifunction steering wheel with an optional textile strap instead of the traditional lower spoke. Its utility remains uncertain, but it certainly attracts attention.

A new intelligent MINI personal assistant makes its debut. It can be activated by saying “Hey MINI”… potentially causing some headaches for Lynk & Co owners who will recognize themselves. The ability to control many functions via voice command increases comfort and allows for greater focus on driving.

In the end, with reduced overhangs, a short hood, a long wheelbase, and large wheels, the proportions of the new generation models are typical of MINI. Customization options include body and roof colors and some decorative stickers. Expect a warm reception for these new models, but the upcoming pricing will be crucial to ensuring the enduring success of this iconic brand amidst the American and Asian wave.
