Subaru and Its Intriguing Coupe in Tokyo

Subaru is paving its way towards an entirely electric range. The upcoming Tokyo Motor Show will be a major milestone.

The Tokyo Mobility Show 2023 in Japan already promises to be a very special event. Far from merely showcasing their production models, Japanese manufacturers seem determined to dynamize a sluggish market. How? By unveiling Concept Cars that are more spectacular than ever. A longstanding Japanese tradition celebrated in the most magnificent way.

Tribute to the Past

Nissan has already revealed two Hyper concepts, previewing its upcoming 100% electric lineup. Now it’s Subaru’s turn to give a glimpse of what it has in store for Tokyo. The focus will be on the Subaru Sport Mobility concept, a sporty electric coupe that could preview a future design direction, a modern reinterpretation of its glorious past.

We only have a dark, moody photo and of course no technical details about the model. However, the image reveals lines that immediately bring a few years back, with a flat hood, a slim headlight line, and a sharp break in the rear third. This concept clearly evokes the XT coupe that Subaru marketed in the late 1980s.

Tokyo catapults Subaru into the future

The XT was a very advanced model in terms of technology that did not receive the recognition it deserved. Its four-cylinder or flat-six engines, naturally aspirated or Turbo, were paired with all-wheel drive. Such mechanical setups are rare for a sporty coupe. The option list also included air suspension and a digital dashboard. It definitely has a 2020s vibe!

Subaru has decided to pursue the electric transition decisively. After capitalizing for years on its WRC heritage, it is now highlighting its best mass-market models. We sincerely can’t wait to see the final result!
