Here is the cheapest new Peugeot currently available

Getting safer and better equipped, call-up cars are also becoming more expensive. At Peugeot, the 208 is the entry-level model.

Attention, things are going to get competitive. As soon as you step into the territory of so-called “mainstream” manufacturers, the price war is expected to be fierce. Because the offer and the purchasing power directly influence the buying decision. Within a few hundred euros, a manufacturer can turn a sale into a loss or a gain.

We recently examined the case of the very interesting Skoda Fabia entry-level model, offered at 15,470 euros. An ambitious challenge to do better than that! Peugeot and its 208 Like “first version” doesn’t even try to accept the challenge. This model, which still has stock to clear to make way for the facelifted version, is priced over 3,000 euros more than the Czech reference: 18,630 euros. Surprising. Let’s find out why!

Price

For 18,640 euros, Peugeot estimates that you should already consider yourself lucky: available in yellow or white, and a first discount of 570 euros on the online store compared to the catalog price of 19,200 euros. Nonetheless, a promo code is provided to interested buyers placing an order online: “DEPART_IMMEDIAT” can be used for the “first version” thermal versions only. The amount of this discount is 2,000 euros! Proof that it’s time to clear the shelves.

The price of the Peugeot 208 Like thus drops to 16,640 euros. That’s still 1,170 euros more than the Skoda Fabia.

Mechanics

With its small 3-cylinder 1.2-liter engine of 75 horsepower paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, the French model is slightly more powerful than the Skoda (65 horsepower). It also benefits from a larger cylinder (1.0 liter for the Fabia) which should give it an advantage in acceleration (118 Nm torque, versus 93 Nm for the Czech). Reaching 100 km/h takes 13.2 seconds and the combined fuel consumption is rated at 5.3 liters/100 km.

This performance will be sufficient in city driving with the first two gears short enough to ensure dynamism. For longer trips with passengers and luggage, you’ll need to accept traveling at 120 km/h to avoid overworking the engine and skyrocketing fuel consumption.

Exterior

Metallic Faro yellow or white paint, black door handles, 15-inch wheels with hubcaps, and halogen headlights. The aesthetic sobriety is obvious. No chrome or other stylistic embellishments, we’re in the frugality dear to Carlos Tavares. The Skoda Fabia isn’t much more fun to look at…

Interior

For over 16,000 euros, the equipment is standard, without any extras. We would have appreciated an extra effort to give this farewell series of the 208’s first generation more appeal.

Conclusion

Today, it’s hard to find the ultimate argument that would make the Peugeot 208 Like win against a more-equipped and much cheaper Skoda Fabia. But if the French model suits your style preferences, then it’s the entry-level car that will make you happy.
