MG ONE, the mid-size SUV we’ve been waiting for

MG offers a mid-size SUV for its Middle Eastern markets, the very stylish MG ONE. A quick overview.

We are now familiar with MG in France through its bestseller, the compact MG4 100% electric. The manufacturer’s strategy in Europe is to focus on an electrified (electric or hybrid) range to avoid mixing messages and positioning.

But elsewhere, MG offers a much more varied gasoline and diesel lineup. Its main markets are India, Mexico, and the Middle East, which notably benefit from the highly successful SUV “One”. The stylistic kinship with the rest of the range is obvious, with lines that are nevertheless much more taut and energetic than the EHS known in France.

With a length of 4.58 meters, it competes with a Renault Austral or Peugeot 3008, for example.

The One is 100% internal combustion. It features a small 1.5-liter turbo developing 181 hp and 285 Nm of torque, coupled with a continuously variable automatic transmission with 7 gears. Confident in its product, MG guarantees it for 6 years and 200,000 km in these regions, which are quite harsh on mechanical parts. The other “shock” is its price: in the United Arab Emirates, it is sold for 88,700 Dirhams, approximately 22,000 euros!

However, for this price, the finish and equipment are very generous. LED headlights, 19-inch wheels, dual 12.3 and 7-inch instrument screens, wireless charger, GPS navigation, two-tone faux leather seats.

Presented in 2021 and launched the following year, it is not yet planned to reach Europe, nor even in an electric version that would surely appeal. Still, MG is attacking on all fronts, which can be a strength but also a weakness. Be careful not to spread oneself too thin.

This proactive approach is currently rewarded with unprecedented sales levels in the entire history of the brand founded in 1924 in Oxford, England.
