MG Unveils a New SUV, the Whale

Intended for Middle Eastern markets, this internal combustion SUV would likely have difficulty finding its place in the European MG lineup.

The Riyadh Motor Show held at the end of the year has become a must-attend event for all key players in this crucial region, including MG. The iconic British manufacturer, now owned by the Chinese brand SAIC Motor, unveiled a particularly interesting new model worldwide debut—the MG Whale.

The MG Whale, which made its debut in the Chinese domestic market in 2022 under the name Roewe Jing (still meaning Whale in French), is described by the company as a revolutionary coupe-SUV. It features bold aesthetics, with a distinctive grille inspired by whale baleen, a rear adorned with curved vertical lights in a hexagonal shape, and a full-width LED light bar. With dimensions of 4,702 mm in length, 1,903 mm in width, and 1,690 mm in height, along with a 2,765 mm wheelbase, the Whale targets, among others, the new Kia Sorento.

Inside, the MG Whale offers a curved panoramic double screen of 12.3 inches, multifunction steering wheel, leather Nappa upholstered seats, ambient lighting, a panoramic roof, and a sleek buttonless design. The powertrain includes a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine producing 228 hp and 370 Nm of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Nothing is lacking in driver assistance features, including 6 airbags, intelligent ABS, electronic stability control, traction control, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, hill start and descent assist, autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree panoramic camera.

This grand launch emphasizes the strategic importance of the Middle East in MG’s global vision. Unless a hybrid version is developed, it is sadly unlikely that this charming little whale will make its way onto the European continent.
