What are the electric hatchbacks under €40,000?

The market for electric station wagons is certainly expanding, but affordable models remain scarce.

Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo, BMW Series i5, Volkswagen ID.7… luxury estate models are multiplying, but the more mainstream offerings are a segment neglected by manufacturers in favor of SUVs. A shame, because their more aerodynamic profiles better match the quest for range.

MG MG5 (€25,990)

CARGO CAPACITY: FROM 479 TO 1367 LITERS

There is nothing cheaper on the market. In terms of value for money and features, the MG MG5 is simply unbeatable.

The Chinese manufacturer is extremely aggressive on pricing, and despite the absence of ecological bonuses due to production in Asia, no European automaker is able to come close.

The entry-level Comfort Standard version offers up to 310 km of range with the 50 kWh battery. Optional upgrades include a 61 kWh battery (380 km range).

As for features, it’s already quite luxurious: heated front seats, 10.25-inch touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, LED headlights, rearview camera, and 16-inch alloy wheels. The Luxury version, costing an additional 1000 euros, adds faux leather upholstery, an electric driver’s seat, 360° camera, 17-inch wheels, automatic air conditioning, rain sensor, and an electrochromatic interior mirror.

With the larger battery and Luxury trim, the MG5 costs only 27,490 euros!

Opel Astra Sports Tourer (€38,140 after bonus deduction)

CARGO CAPACITY: FROM 516 TO 1760 LITERS

Shifting to a very stylish Opel Astra Sports Tourer. But also a change in pricing despite eligibility for a 4000-euro eco bonus in 2024. Starting at 42,140 euros before bonus (38,140 euros final), the German model commands a premium for its more upscale positioning. The issue is, at this price point, many more compelling options exist:

Renault Scenic E-Tech

Thus, it’s difficult to find many reasons to choose this Opel Astra Sports Tourer. It is attractive, but its dynamic qualities are quite limited: 156 hp and up to 413 km of WLTP mixed cycle range. The more than 12,000-euro difference with the MG MG5 (almost 50%) is hard to justify…

Peugeot e-308 SW (€38,590 after bonus deduction)

Same reasons, same consequences for the cousin of the Opel Astra Sports Tourer. The two share the same platform and very similar pricing.

Therefore, the Peugeot e-308 SW seems less relevant compared to more attractive electric options in this family segment. Within the Peugeot family, the E-3008, with its highly successful design and finishes, costs just slightly more (40,990 euros after bonus) for significantly better features.
