Rivian R3, the worthy successor to the Lada Niva!

Rivian launches a compact affordable electric SUV called R3. With its boxy lines and minimalist interior, it’s impossible not to think of the legendary Lada Niva.

Rivian has therefore unveiled the R3 and R3X SUVs, which will join the range in the coming years, likely in 2027. The Rivian R3 shares its platform with the new R2, which was also revealed today, but has a 15 cm shorter wheelbase. The Rivian R3X is a sporty variant featuring three electric motors, wider wheels and tires, and a higher ground clearance. Its very 80s-style wheels are quite striking and will remind older enthusiasts of some rally cars with rings…

The Rivian R3 features the brand’s signature styling cues with a distinctive front light signature and smooth body panels. The style is ultra-retro, which paradoxically gives it a very modern look. If it catches your eye, it’s because it’s successful. The wheels are pushed to the four corners, and the rear overhang is almost nonexistent. The power tailgate with electric opening includes a full-width rear light and a smaller section with the rear window that opens independently. Rivian understands that its target audience is young, trendy, and likely to carry a surfboard. More simply, it’s quite practical for quickly tossing groceries into the trunk.

Very modern retro

Customers will likely have a choice between a single rear-wheel-drive electric motor or dual motors for all-wheel drive. The three-motor configuration is expected to be reserved for the more robust R3X.

Inside, what can be seen is simple yet sturdy, matching the overall style. A large glass roof helps make the interior more airy, and the front and rear seats fold flat. Perfect for creating a makeshift sleeping space after… a good surf session.

The pricing details for these models will likely be announced closer to launch, which is expected in three years, although market conditions and new technology developments, particularly for batteries, will influence the final prices. A starting price of around 40,000 euros seems realistic. The most important thing is that these models will be sold in Europe, and we are eager to see these two new Rivians!
