Bugatti pays tribute to the Type 55

Jean Bugatti’s legacy has endured over time, and the Type 55, which this Chiron celebrates, still testifies to his immense talent today.

The Type 55 Super Sport housed an inline eight-cylinder 2.3-liter engine derived from that of the formidable Type 51 racing car. Its true originality, however, lay in its elegant two-seater roadster bodywork, straight out of Jean Bugatti’s imagination. Pioneering the Super Sport model at Bugatti, the Type 55 marked the beginning of a new era, even redefining the very concept of grand touring vehicle by harmoniously combining comfort and performance, with a top speed of 180 km/h, remarkable for its time.

Limited to just 38 units, the Type 55 Super Sport is a rare gem, and its scarcity only enhances its status as a highly coveted collector’s piece. Also the first Grand Prix car adapted for the road, its history has captivated the imagination of a future owner of a Chiron Super Sport and the team in charge of Custom Projects at Bugatti.

A Number and a Bodywork

This unique Chiron Super Sport “55 1 of 1” features the now-famous two-tone paintwork adopted by Jean on the Type 55, reusing the black and yellow combination dear to Ettore Bugatti. On the hyper-sports car, the colors serve not only to express dynamism but also to visually differentiate the surfaces of the bodywork in a quest for the right balance in terms of colors, while maintaining overall design cohesion, with the dominant converging point being the central black edge reminiscent of that of the Type 55. This visual element is reinforced by the black line surrounding Bugatti’s iconic horseshoe grille and by an elegant yellow line extending from the rear face to the wings of the hyper-sports car.

Minimalist black ten-spoke wheels, adorned with the yellow “EB” emblem at the center, further enhance the bold look of the Chiron Super Sport “55 1 of 1.” The inscription “55 1 of 1” under the rear wing clearly echoes the masterpiece that inspired this modern artistic creation. Featuring an elegant black leather interior reminiscent of the exterior, the cabin displays unique details such as embroidered headrests bearing the inscription “55 1 of 1.” The door panels are also decorated with a carefully hand-sewn pattern of a series of “55”s in a vibrant yellow hue.
