Ayrton Senna’s Nephew Recreates the “Tour of the Gods”

McLaren Senna Donington

At the 1993 European Grand Prix, Ayrton Senna gave us one of the greatest moments in Formula 1 history.

Ayrton Senna passed away 30 years ago, but the flame of his legend will never cease to shine. The 1993 European Grand Prix took place at the British circuit of Donington Park. It is forever engraved in memories, not only because it was the scene of one of Ayrton Senna’s most glorious victories, but especially for an exceptional first lap performance by the Brazilian champion.

The 1993 season was frustrating for Senna who, driving the McLaren MP4/8 powered by a feeble Ford V8, couldn’t regularly compete against the overwhelmingly dominant Williams Renault V10 driven by his great rival Alain Prost. But Senna is not nicknamed Magic for nothing! On an increasingly wet track due to a surprise shower and under incredibly perilous conditions, Ayrton Senna went from fifth to first position right at the start. Recovering from a poor start thanks to his exceptional talent, he defied all conventional racing line logic to overtake one competitor after another along the 4.023 km track. This feat is now known as the “Tour of the Gods.”

To pay tribute to this famous feat, Bruno Senna, Ayrton’s nephew, took to the Donington track in the hypercar McLaren Senna named after the legendary Brazilian driver, embodying total dedication to performance on the track. Three decades later, the greatest homage we can pay to the champion can only be made on the stage of one of his greatest exploits.
