The electric Ford Explorer reveals… disappointing prices!

Ford Explorer 2024

More than a year after its unveiling, Ford has finally opened the order book for its electric SUV, although delivery is still delayed.

There’s a difference between opening the order books and delivering to customers. The Ford Explorer seems to be a very appealing vehicle, but it can be criticized for the time it has taken from its presentation to its market launch. Unveiled in March 2023, its online configurator is now launching a year later. But an asterisk draws attention: “estimated delivery 24 weeks.” That’s 6 months. At minimum!

This means we will be looking at the fall of 2024 at best. Already, two trims are available, but with only the “Extended Range” battery. Prices range from 46,900 euros (before incentives, or 42,900 euros) for the EXPLORER trim to 50,500 euros for the PACK PREMIUM trim. Good news: the heated steering wheel and front seats, massaging driver’s seat, and induction charging are part of the standard equipment.

2 or 4-wheel drive?

This Extended Range battery is somewhat misleading: on the 2-wheel drive version with 286 hp (0 to 100 km/h in 6.4 s), its capacity is 77 kWh. On the 4-wheel drive version with 340 hp (0 to 100 km/h in 5.3 s), it rises to 79 kWh! Nevertheless, it’s the “77 kWh” version that offers the best range of 602 km (572 km with Pack Premium) with a consumption of 13.9 kWh/100 km. The all-wheel drive version drops to 566 km (532 km with Pack Premium) as its price starts at 53,900 euros and hence loses eligibility for the ecological bonus.

As standard, the Arctic Blue color (shown here) is free. All other colors will incur a charge ranging from 350 to 900 euros. The 21-inch wheels come with an additional cost of 1200 euros, the heat pump 1150 euros, and the driving assistance package (Park Assist, 360° camera, lane-keeping, heads-up display, and hands-free tailgate) 1800 euros. Other options appear on the Pack Premium version (panoramic roof for 1000 euros) or see their price drop: 21-inch wheels for 600 euros, driving assistance for 1300 euros.

A cheaper version coming soon

A so-called “Standard Battery” version will be offered by the end of 2024 (yes, really…) starting at 43,900 euros, or 39,900 euros after deducting the ecological bonus. But faced with Renault Scenic or Tesla Model Y that are even cheaper, what arguments will this “little” Explorer have to convince customers?

It still has time to sharpen its ideas…
