No longer in a state of grace, diesel struggles to find takers and today forces Mercedes to discount this powertrain that was once king.

The advent of a electric car and an array of new manufacturers emerging from nowhere upsets the established balances that have been in place for decades in the automotive world. And no one is spared. Who would have thought, just a few years ago, that a Mercedes would be discounted by 25% before the customer even stepped into the dealership?

The ecological paradigm shift towards electric vehicles has been so fierce over the past 4-5 years that manufacturers’ industrial tools cannot keep up. Logically, they are still producing diesel engines which are becoming less and less interesting, otherwise they would have to lay off thousands of employees. So, sometimes at a loss, manufacturers are gently supporting this transition.

A very European engine type, because of its lesser exposure to the Gulf countries’ energy dependency, diesel is no longer considered worth its true value. Clearly, it was harmful to health, but you can’t have everything. Turning mountains upside down to extract minerals for batteries doesn’t seem any greener…
