A Factory of the Future for the Ford Explorer

The new 100% electric and 100% European Ford Explorer is on its way. Its production has started at the ultra-modern factory in Cologne.

The new 100% electric Ford Explorer is the first vehicle to come out of the Ford Cologne Electric Vehicle Center, a historic production site transformed into a factory of the future after a $2 billion investment! A second electric vehicle, a new sporty crossover, will be revealed soon, and its production will begin in Cologne later this year.

The Explorer features 100% electric powertrains and a range of over 600 km on a single charge in the long-range version.

Factory of the Future

The Cologne Electric Vehicle Center, located in Germany, is equipped with advanced artificial intelligence and hundreds of meticulously organized robots. This center will produce a new generation of Ford electric vehicles designed in Europe and for Europe. It relies on self-learning machines and over 600 new robots that handle welding, cutting, dusting, and painting operations with extreme precision, efficiency, and quality.

Automated guided vehicles transport materials and ready-to-use parts to the workstation in the body shop. These autonomous transport systems follow predefined routes based on floor markings or laser navigation and detect obstacles using built-in sensors.

Throughout the production line, data is continuously collected and communicated to ensure the accuracy of every detail and improve processes. Vehicles are randomly selected for examination by cameras and scanners in a dedicated measurement center.
