Citroën Ami: Paris-Marseille for €23, but there’s a catch…

With the arrival of nice weather, the temptation to hit the road for vacation is strong. Including in a Citroën Ami? Hmm…

A quick look at train or airplane ticket prices has disgusted you. So, you’re thinking that maybe embarking on a summer road trip with your Citroën Ami (starting from 7,990 euros) isn’t such a bad idea after all… Especially since this June 2024 reminds you of your younger years and the Math BAC exam. Thus, the idea was born to pack a suitcase, call a friend, and set off on an adventure, like in Dumb & Dumber on a mini bike (they were in Colorado).

To convince yourself of the feasibility of a limited budget, you simply need to pull out your calculator. The Citroën Ami is said to have a range of 75 kilometers, but that’s not realistic. Instead, plan for a real 40 km… which would already be quite an achievement knowing that the car will constantly be at the speed limiter, that is, 45 km/h.

Knowing that there are 775 km between Paris and Marseille (let’s keep it simple) divided by as many 40 km relays, you end up with 19 battery recharges of 5.3 kWh. That’s 100.7 kW charged at 0.23 euros each, totaling 23 euros!

That’s the promise… but there’s a big “but”! The travel time. And that’s where the TGV remains a bit more efficient, let’s admit it.

To determine the time needed to travel from Paris to Marseille with a Citroën Ami with a range of 40 km and a charging time of 4 hours, you need to pull out the calculator again and add a new parameter: a top speed limited to 45 km/h.

From there, dividing the 775 km by 45 km/h immediately implies 17.2 hours of non-stop driving. To that, you need to add 19 stops of 4 hours for charging (+76 hours). In the end, you get a total travel time of 93.2 hours, or about 3.9 days each way… and just as much on the way back. Hoping you won’t be taking just one week of vacation this summer…
