Is it foolish to pay €21,000 for a Renault 5 with a 300 km range?

The war of figures sometimes makes us forget the essential. What autonomy do we really need when we want a Renault 5?

If you are a regular reader of Mobiwisy, first of all, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts! Then, you know that we do not focus on autonomy when we talk about electric cars, but we are scrupulous about charging speeds and, of course, prices. In this respect, the case of the Renault 5 “small battery” is more than interesting.

We are going to disappoint the most ardent enemies of electric cars by confirming that you will never be able to drive 300 km on the highway on a single charge with a car that claims such autonomy in the WLTP cycle. Sorry, we just spoiled a good little anger for you, with lots of strong words against electric cars. By respecting speed limits and having a light foot, you can hope for a maximum of 200 km.

So now ask yourself this very simple question. How many times a year do you travel 200 km in one go? If the answer is several times a week, then the low-priced Renault 5 is obviously not for you. On the other hand, a nice hybrid with 1,000 km of autonomy will make you happy! Forget Diesel; it stinks, it’s outdated, and it doesn’t do much better.

Do you have the car you need?

But if you take your car once or twice a year to go far on vacation, and occasionally head out on weekends to visit family in the region, is losing a few minutes per trip to charge really a drama? Sacrificing a few hours in the year to enjoy driving a modern and fun Renault 5 every day instead of a badly perceived and particularly unmanageable SUV is ultimately not such a stupid choice, is it? You surely know someone who bought a big flashy SUV just to make short trips downtown.

This is why offering a nice car at a low price by cutting down on battery size and power makes perfect sense. A Renault 5 Five with 95 horsepower and 300 km of autonomy is an everyday car for the city and the countryside, nothing more, nothing less. At 21,000 euros if the bonus is maintained at 4,000 euros, or more likely 22,000 euros if it goes down to 3,000 euros, it’s a very interesting offer for 2025. And the LLD and LOA offers should make it very accessible. That’s all, no need for more figures.
