Winter Tire Package for €2175: Another Poor Deal from Tesla?

Tesla offers during these winter months a pack consisting of 4 wheels and 4 Pirelli winter tires priced at 2175 euros… with a nice added value in the process.

The idea is commendable on paper: in Europe, many countries have a Mountain Law requiring drivers to fit winter tires on specific dates of the year. But rather than delivering directly to customers with typically more expensive winter tires, Tesla offers as an option a full set of tires on its Model Y (excluding the Performance version). This set includes four 19-inch Sport rims and mounted Pirelli Sottozero 3 tires. It’s then up to the customer to install them—or have them installed at their expense—upon receipt.

But there’s a slight catch: the price is eye-catching. At 2175 euros, one immediately suspects there must be a cheaper solution than this, especially since it involves bulky, plain-looking rims without wheel covers (an extra hundred euros). That’s why we conducted an investigation.

How much do 4 Pirelli Sottozero 3 tires cost?

First, it’s necessary to find the exact size of the tires for the Tesla Model Y. This is verified by Tesla via its official page. It involves front and rear wheels that are strictly identical (this is no longer the case on the 21-inch version) with the size 255/45R19 XL. After just three minutes of online research, you find this very common reference on the sites of top sellers, such as Allopneus.com. There’s no risk of scams or fraud here, and prices are competitive. So, we find what we need at 218.20 euros each, totaling 872.80 euros. And for this price, delivery to a workshop is included… as well as mounting the tires on the rims. Unbeatable! Not to mention the option to pay in 4 installments at the time of order.

All that remains is to find four rims with the right dimensions…

How much do 4 Tesla Model Y rims cost?

Again, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel (no pun intended). The simplest solution is to go to Le Bon Coin, where private listings are plentiful… and negotiation is possible. The Tesla Model Y fleet is currently very large, so it’s easy to find original rims, even without traveling across France.

We found four Tesla rims in perfect dimensions for just 300 euros. As a bonus, the four original wheel covers, though not brand new.

In the end, without overthinking, we arrive at a full set of winter wheels for the total of 872.80 + 300 = 1172.80 euros. That’s at least 1000 euros — or 46% — less than what Tesla is offering! A nice profit for the American manufacturer, which seems to fall back into its legendary pattern: offering something it doesn’t want to sell. Options, and anything that complicates the industrial process, are disliked at Tesla because they represent a loss of income. That’s why 90% of Model Y are either white or black, the other colors being exorbitantly priced.
