HONGQI France

After making a spectacular debut at the International Motor Show, HONGQI is now stepping into the European market with the EH7 sedan and the EHS7 SUV.

HONGQI is not exactly a newcomer to the automotive industry since the manufacturer produced its first car in … 1958! The CA72 became the first model produced independently and on a large scale in China. Since then, “Hongqi” has been a term in the Middle Kingdom referring to a state vehicle reserved for leaders and a prestige car used during major national events. Interestingly, in France, we barely know the world’s leading producer of electric vehicles, BYD, and are completely unaware of a brand that has been around for nearly 70 years, such as HONGQI. It’s so much easier to think that Chinese cars are disposable junk vehicles hastily made. The awakening is going to be brutal…

In the late 1970s, Hongqi began to attempt a few timid commercial forays outside its borders, but without much success. By the early 2020s, a new very aggressive strategy and a new design concept led to an increase in sales in the domestic market and a significant rise in global exports. By 2025, the brand will arrive in France with two very well-designed and finished models. Believe us, this approach is anything but a one-night affair.

The EH7 and EHS7 are built on the new HONGQI Tiangong electric platform. A platform specifically designed to host 100% electric powertrains, allowing for significantly increased range and reduced charging times. The EH7 boasts a range of 655 kilometers, while the EHS7 offers 600 kilometers. Both models are equipped with fast-charging technology that allows charging from 10% to 80% in just 20 minutes. Are we starting to take the brand seriously?

Thanks to the brand’s Luxembourg website, we now know the starting prices for both models. The EH7 is offered starting at €56,995 and the EHS7 at €52,995. However, we do not yet know if these prices include European customs fees.

HONGQI now aims to establish a vast sales and service network across 29 European countries. Over the next five years, the brand plans to launch 20 additional new models, and you know what? It will likely do so and sell them.
