Zinédine Zidane x A290

Expected to be the future coach of the French team, he is a dream ambassador for Alpine. And what if it was all just a blue story about France?

We left Zinédine Zidane on June 15th wearing a racing suit and an Alpine helmet at the starting grid of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Ambassador and sponsor of equality of opportunity programs Alpine, Zizou kicked off the legendary endurance race. Flag in hand, the football legend released the 62 cars entered in the event. “Starting the 24 Hours of Le Mans is a great honor, it’s a mythic race. It was also important for me to come and support the drivers. You have to hold those 24 hours! It’s always amazing to imagine drivers driving at such a high performance level for so long, that’s the magic of endurance…”

Before that, the World Champion and Ballon d’Or 1998 had a very special track baptism aboard the Alpine Alpenglow Hy4, a prototype running on hydrogen. A glimpse of the future of sports cars because starting in 2028, a specific category will host competition cars using liquid hydrogen as fuel. While the Alpenglow uses it alongside an internal combustion engine, the H24EVO, another prototype also shown at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, combines it with a fuel cell and an electric powertrain.

While this ride in the Alpine Alpenglow was done wearing a helmet inside the cramped cockpit of the prototype, Zidane was able to enjoy a quieter lap in a Renault Rafale Esprit Alpine, taking the time to greet spectators and track officials. For the record, the car was driven by Pierre Fillon, President of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, organizer of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Eight months later, Zidane is seen in a setting much more familiar to him, in Madrid, behind the wheel of the Alpine A290. The Alpine ambassador was among the first to be able to drive in the streets of his hometown at the wheel of his A290 GT Performance. “Thanks to my role as ambassador, I had the chance to spend time with the entire team of the electric Alpine program; it’s exciting,” he rejoices. “And now I’m already driving in Madrid with this beautiful little electric A290! It’s quite incredible, easy to drive and at the same time sporty; real pleasure!”
