EU allowance: new €310 bonus for switching to electric cars

Electric vehicle buyers can now benefit, in addition to the ecological bonus, from an energy savings certificate (CEE) bonus.

This CEE bonus (certificates of energy savings), which ranges from a few hundred euros for individuals to several thousand for utility vehicles, adds to the array of incentives available for the transition to greener mobility.

CEEs, used until now mainly in the context of building energy renovation and industry, are certificates awarded to energy suppliers to encourage them to promote energy savings among their customers. Established in 2005, this system allows energy suppliers to meet energy savings targets by acquiring CEEs, measured in updated cumulative kilowatt-hours.

Any bonus is worth taking

This year, the automotive sector also benefits from this aid, with a simplified system. Since January 1, 2025, this system includes the purchase or rental of a light or utility electric vehicle for more than 24 months, quadricycle with or without a license, new by an individual, a local authority, or a corporate entity. Unlike energy renovation, where comparing offers from suppliers is necessary, purchasing an electric vehicle is simpler. For example, at Renault, the entire process is managed by the manufacturer, which handles the valuation of CEEs with the obligor, CertiNergy, a subsidiary of Engie. The €310 bonus for individuals is directly credited to the account, with no additional steps required from the buyer.

This bonus is especially attractive for certain segments, such as light utility vehicles, for which the aid was withdrawn at the beginning of the year, as well as for electric quadricycles without a license. Amounts vary from €310 for an individual purchasing an electric car, up to €4,500 for a utility vehicle, depending on the manufacturer and the customer type.
