Sold for €39,900, the Ford Explorer threatens the Tesla Model Y

With a consistent discount of 4,000 euros, the Ford Explorer with a large 79 kWh battery is much cheaper than the Tesla Model Y Long Range.

This is the very good offer of the moment: Ford’s electric SUV, the Explorer, based on the Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4, and ID.5 platforms, is being heavily discounted. Just as customers are turning away from Tesla and the extreme political stances of its CEO, Elon Musk. Coincidence?

With a catalog price in 2025 of 45,900 euros, the Ford Explorer is somewhat more expensive compared to the Tesla Model Y. This is why the American manufacturer is currently applying a 4,000-euro discount across the range. Additionally, there is the 2025 eco-bonus of at least 2,000 euros, up to 4,000 euros for low-income households (though their priority isn’t necessarily to buy a €40,000 SUV…).

Thus, for all French households, the Ford Explorer costs now 39,900 euros in March 2025. And this isn’t a stripped-down or small-battery version. No, these models feature the Extended Range battery of 79 kWh, providing up to 544 km in WLTP mixed cycle. That’s better than the Tesla Model Y Long Range 2025 (500 km), which deliveries won’t start until summer.

Critical minds will rightfully say that the Ford Explorer is underpowered. Its power in this configuration is 150 kW, or 204 horsepower, compared to 300 horsepower for the Tesla Model Y. But in practice, driving the Ford Explorer is very enjoyable and not at all nauseating, unlike the Tesla at times due to its One Pedal handling.

The 0 to 100 km/h acceleration takes only 8.5 seconds.
