Latest rumors about the affordable Tesla

Rumors from Chinese social networks suggest that Tesla China is developing a model internally nicknamed “E80”.

This highly anticipated model is said to be a more affordable version of the Tesla Model Y. This could seriously confuse customers of the recently facelifted SUV! According to unconfirmed but widely circulated reports—adding to their credibility—the Model Y “E80” would be equipped with a battery capacity estimated between 50 and 55 kWh. Its launch would depend on the commercial performance of current versions of the Model Y. Some speculate it could be marketed as early as the second half of 2025, while others expect it to be launched rather in 2026.

In terms of price, estimates vary between 150,000 and 170,000 yuan (approximately 18,130 to 20,550 euros) according to certain sources, while others suggest a price of 190,000 to 210,000 yuan (23,000 to 25,400 euros). By way of comparison, the standard Model Y is currently sold in China starting at 31,800 euros.

Credible Rumors?

To achieve nearly 10,000 euros in cost savings, the “E80” would feature simplified characteristics: smaller wheels, single-pane side windows, no rear screen, fewer speakers, monochrome interior lighting, non-heated and non-ventilated fabric seats, a manual trunk, and a metal roof.

Although Tesla has not confirmed anything, this strategy is not unprecedented. Recently, Tesla launched a simplified rear-wheel-drive (RWD) version of the Cybertruck, less equipped and cheaper than the all-wheel-drive version. Proof once again that Tesla knows how to make things cheaper based on existing models!
