MG in Uncharted Territory with the Cyber X

MG unveiled the Cyber X, a radical compact electric SUV with retractable headlights, at the Shanghai Auto Show.

MG presented the Cyber X, a 100% electric SUV concept, at the Shanghai Auto Show in China. It is the second model in the Cyber series, after the Cyberster roadster launched in November 2023.

The Cyber X stands out with a compact, angular silhouette, featuring matte black bodywork. Among its striking design elements are retractable headlights, which only appear when in use before retracting back. Given their size, they are more of a stylistic feature than an aerodynamic tool, but they get the job done! This innovative design is the work of Jozef Kabaň, a renowned Slovak designer who previously worked for Volkswagen, BMW, and Rolls-Royce. Since April 2024, he has been overseeing MG’s design at SAIC Motor, the Chinese owner of the brand.

This SUV features smoked A and B pillars, creating a floating roof effect when viewed from the side. Its two-tone five-spoke wheels combine silver and black finishes. Inside, the infotainment and connectivity technologies were developed in collaboration with smartphone manufacturer Oppo.

To date, MG has not disclosed the technical specifications or prices of the Cyber X. According to sources close to the manufacturer, its launch is expected next year.

Once a British manufacturer, MG has since integrated into the Chinese empire SAIC Motor, which aims to establish itself in the electric vehicle (EV) market. The brand plans to launch eight new electric models by 2027, including large SUVs, sedans, and sports cars… in short, a whole new lineup expected by the end of the year. Last March, MG already unveiled the new MG4. This compact model will be launched in China in the second quarter before arriving in Europe by the end of the year.
