No Inflation for Used Cars

Good news for budget car enthusiasts: used car prices are significantly declining in France.

Used car prices are returning to pre-inflation levels according to data published on September 23, 2025, by leboncoin auto, the leading platform in the sector with over 700,000 listings online. After several years of continuous increases, prices are now comparable to those at the end of 2021. This development eases household automotive budgets, in a context where overall inflation has risen by +15% since 2021.

Between 2020 and 2023, component shortages and reduced production caused a surge in prices, initially for new vehicles and then for used ones. The value of used cars increased by about 30%. Over the past two years, the trend has reversed, thanks to an increased supply and efforts by dealerships.

New technologies reassure, even in the used market

Today, the gaps are significant in the used market. The most notable correction concerns electric vehicles, with decreases reaching up to €10,000 from the 2021 peak.

On the demand side, the market confirms a shift toward so-called alternative powertrains. Searches for electric vehicles have increased by 25% in one year, and those for hybrids by 11%. Meanwhile, diesel and gasoline models are down by 10% and 6%, respectively. Among professionals, hybrid registrations have soared by 40% since January, now accounting for 12% of used car sales.

While gasoline and diesel still dominate, with around 90% of total demand, the share of alternative powertrains continues to grow and now surpasses a quarter of available listings.
