Defender Gains a Legend for Dakar

After a year of absence, Stéphane Peterhansel will make his grand return to the Dakar driving the Defender D7x.

The British manufacturer Defender has taken a crucial step in its preparation for the 2026 World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC) and the famous Dakar. The Defender Dakar D7X-R prototype, intended for the “Stock” category, was tested in the Sahara desert dunes ahead of its first official participation.

Among the recruited drivers, we find Stéphane Peterhansel, a Dakar legend with 14 wins, as well as Rokas Baciuška, a promising young talent from Lithuania. The duo joined the Defender Rally team to begin testing and to prepare for the challenges of the most demanding races in the world.

The Defender Dakar D7X-R, built on the aluminum D7x platform, retains the features of serial models while incorporating modifications for racing. Powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, the prototype sports a distinctive camouflage. Initial testing in Morocco allowed for evaluating the vehicle’s reliability and durability in extreme conditions, promising a strong debut in 2026.

Alongside the Dakar, Defender will enter two vehicles in other W2RC events, continuing its commitment in the rally-raid universe. With experienced drivers and rigorous preparation, the brand aims to establish itself as a reference in this demanding field.
