Porsche celebrates the 25th anniversary of the 911 GT3, perhaps its purest sports car, at the Rétromobile show 2025.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the legendary Porsche 911 GT3, the German manufacturer is organizing a special exhibition at the Rétromobile show, from February 4 to 9, 2025, in Paris. This must-see event pays tribute to the history of this performance icon, unveiled for the first time in 1999 at the Geneva Motor Show with the 911 GT3 type 996.

To mark this anniversary, Porsche is presenting a retrospective tracing the evolution of the model, highlighting its connection with motorsport. Visitors will be able to discover several historic models, such as the legendary 911 Carrera 2.8 RSR from 1973, a bare chassis of the 911 Carrera RS (964), as well as the different generations of the 911 GT3: type 996 phase 2, 997 phase 2, 991 phase 2, and the very latest 911 GT3 type 992.2.

A story shaped by competition

The origin of the 911 GT3 dates back to the 1970s with models such as the 911 Carrera 2.8 RSR, designed exclusively for racing. With its 300 hp engine and optimized weight, this car embodied the essence of performance. Later, the 911 Carrera RS (964), produced between 1989 and 1994, marked a crucial milestone in the evolution of the 911 by modernizing the range while remaining true to its sporty DNA.

The 911 GT3 type 996, launched in 1999, set the standards for a road-legal sports car, with a 3.6-liter atmospheric engine developing 360 hp. Each subsequent generation pushed the limits further. The type 997 introduced technologies such as adaptive suspension (PASM) and traction control. The 991, with its PDK transmission and rear-wheel steering, further elevated the performance level, culminating in the phase 2 equipped with a 4.0-liter engine delivering 500 hp.

The new Porsche 911 GT3 (992.2)

Unveiled in October 2024, the latest generation of the 911 GT3 celebrates this anniversary by combining tradition and innovation. For the first time, options such as rear seats and the Weissach Package are offered, enhancing its unique character. The GT3 type 992.2 stands as the heir to an exceptional legacy, combining top performance with a passion for driving.
