MG in the Era of Resilience

Between resilience in Europe and deep uncertainties in France, MG is experiencing difficult times after the euphoria of 2023.

MG Motor shows notable growth in Europe, with a 20% increase in sales in 2024, reaching 240,000 deliveries compared to 200,000 in 2023. But in France, the situation is more contrasting. Despite a total of 25,782 registrations (1.45% market share), MG Motor records a 25% decline compared to 2023, a year marked by exceptional results that seem difficult to replicate.

The manufacturer, facing structural challenges, had to rapidly revise its strategy after ceasing production of its electric models MG Marvel R, MG ZS EV, and MG5 in March due to the GSR 2 standard. This loss, combined with the removal of ecological bonuses for many individuals, led to a significant drop in sales of 100% electric vehicles, which still accounted for over 80% of sales in 2023.

To compensate, MG introduced two new hybrid models in 2024: the city car MG3 Hybrid+ and the SUV MG ZS Hybrid+. These late launches sparked renewed interest, resulting in over 10,000 orders in the last quarter. In December, MG registered 7,947 vehicles, ranking as the 6th manufacturer in France (4.18% market share). However, this upswing remains fragile, and it will take at least six months to determine whether the momentum of 2023 is just a distant memory.

The shift toward a hybrid lineup appears promising, as these models already account for 52.8% of annual sales in France. But with 2024 characterized as a “transition” year, the sustainability of this strategy remains uncertain.

For 2025, MG Motor plans to expand its range with six new hybrid and electric models, bringing the total offering to ten vehicles. This diversification could help the British-origin manufacturer regain a solid position in the French market. However, facing increased competition and uncertain economic conditions, the coming months will be crucial to confirm this ambition.
