What would Tesla do in Nissan’s trouble?

The rumor of Tesla entering Nissan’s capital has fueled the week, but the idea seems to have faded quickly.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk quickly and firmly denied the idea that his company might invest in the Japanese automaker Nissan. This statement comes after a report claiming that a Japanese lobbying group had solicited a strategic investment from Tesla, which caused Nissan’s stock to jump 9.5% on Friday. Nissan is going through a difficult period, marked by upheavals in its management and declining profitability, making its efforts to invest in electric vehicles more challenging. After canceling merger discussions with Honda this month, Nissan is trying to regain some stability. These discussions, initially motivated by a proposed acquisition by Foxconn, highlight the company’s interest in producing a significant share of the global electric vehicles.

The alliance of evils?

For Nissan, selling its factories could be a strategic move within its restructuring plan, which involves cutting 9,000 jobs worldwide. However, for Tesla, maintaining control over its own facilities remains a major advantage. Musk emphasizes the superiority of his manufacturing processes, especially for his upcoming model, the Cybercab, an entirely autonomous taxi.

Reacting on X, the social network he owns, Musk stated: “The Tesla factory IS the product. The Cybercab production line is unparalleled in the automotive industry.”

Despite its financial difficulties, Nissan seeks to maintain its status as a global brand without ceding control to foreign interests. The company’s board of directors has of course refrained from commenting, likely too pleased with this small stock boost to risk denying anything.
