Surprise, the Renault 5 is not the best-selling electric car in France

February 2025 marks a turning point in electric car sales in France, with the Citroën ë-C3 surpassing the Renault 5.

With 3,058 registrations last month according to AAA Data, the ë-C3 establishes itself as the best-selling electric car, narrowly surpassing the Renault 5, which recorded 3,034 units.

This unexpected success for Citroën is explained by a bold pricing strategy, making electric vehicles more accessible than ever. The ë-C3 appeals to buyers thanks to its value for money, but also to its French production, which reassures consumers. In comparison, the Renault 5, despite its retro-modern look and the title of “Car of the Year 2025,” seems slightly held back by a higher price, although its appeal remains undeniable. Note simply that these figures do not take into account the sales of Alpine A290, a lively cousin of the Renault 5 sharing the same technical base.

Tesla eclipsed by the French brands?

Meanwhile, Tesla, once indispensable, shows signs of weakness. The Model Y, accustomed to top positions, drops to third place with only 1,738 registrations combined in January and February. This decline is mainly due to the imminent arrival of a facelifted version, whose deliveries will begin in April, making these figures anything but trivial! In the meantime, the transition leaves a gap that Renault and Citroën are fully exploiting.

With a total of 25,335 electric registrations in February, the market remains stable compared to the previous year, but the current dynamics illustrate a real rise of French brands. The battle between Renault and Citroën promises to be exciting in the coming months, while Tesla will need to react quickly to regain its place. The arrival of the new Model Y could change the game, but for now, this French dominance is a welcome sight!
