The difficulties of Tesla in Europe are confirmed with a new dramatic drop in sales in February.

Tesla’s sales recorded an alarming collapse in Europe, according to data published Wednesday by our colleagues at Reuters. In February, sales in Germany plummeted by 76%, with only 1,429 vehicles registered, a decline even more pronounced than the 60% drop in January. This underperformance is part of a broader decline for Elon Musk’s brand on the continent.

Other European countries show similar results: -45% in France, -24% in the Netherlands, -42% in Sweden, -48% in Norway and Denmark, -55% in Italy, -10% in Spain, and -53% in Portugal. In January, Tesla had already experienced a 45% drop in Europe compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile, the situation is equally concerning on a global scale. Sales of Tesla vehicles produced in China have fallen by 49%, amid fierce competition from local manufacturers now completely unrestrained in front of the American brand. In Australia, which is one of the key markets for Tesla’s launch of the new Model Y, registrations plummeted by 66%. Only the United Kingdom stands out with a 21% increase in Tesla sales in February, but this growth is part of a 42% overall increase in battery electric vehicle sales.

No longer hide from the truth

One can look for several structural factors such as the renewal of the Model Y to partly explain these declines, but it becomes evident that Tesla’s declining popularity in Europe is directly linked to the divisive personality of Elon Musk and his open support for far-right European parties, such as the AfD in Germany. This controversial stance seems to have alienated a portion of the European clientele, while the market for electric vehicles continues to grow. In Germany, sales of electric cars surged by 30.8% to reach 35,949 units in February.

The Californian brand, once synonymous with electric revolution and ecological conscience, is facing the greatest challenge in its history, that of image.
