The Electric Porsche Cayenne Ahead of the New Boxster

Porsche has adjusted its priorities. The electric Cayenne will be launched before the lightweight electric sports lineup.

It has already been two years since Porsche announced an all-electric Cayenne. Since then, the company’s lineup has expanded with the Macan EV, which has become the most affordable model in the catalog. On the occasion of the presentation of the 2024 results, CEO Oliver Blume confirmed that the launch of the electric Cayenne will take place this year at an event to be announced in the United States. Choosing North America is no surprise since Porsche’s large SUV is a best-seller there. It remains to be seen how recent decisions by Donald Trump regarding the taxation of European cars will influence this.

This fourth-generation Cayenne will be 100% electric, but current combustion versions will continue to be produced in Bratislava, Slovakia, alongside the electric models. Unlike the Macan, which has become exclusively electric in 2024, the combustion Cayenne will continue to exist until the end of the decade, with hybrid engines.

Porsche does not want to sacrifice sportiness

Regarding lightweight sports cars, the launch of the electric two-seater coupé and convertible has been postponed after the Cayenne EV. The 2025 horizon is now dismissed, as they talk about an arrival within 5 years, without further details. With the 718 ceasing production this year, the lineup will thus rely solely on the 911 series. Quite logical, since an electric two-seater convertible will always be heavier than the entry-level 911. Furthermore, Porsche customers remain attached to the delights of the combustion engine, and when they are convinced by electric, they seek comfort and space. All of which is offered by the Macan.

Porsche thus grants itself a breather, giving time to develop lighter electric technology. In the end, everything is fine in the best of worlds!
