A new but damaged Tesla for 25,000 euros, are you interested?

Tesla will not build a small car for under 25,000 euros. But the manufacturer still wants to offer one!

The dream of an accessible Tesla for under 25,000 euros is on hold. We had heard everything about it: a one-piece body, a sleek design borrowing from the Cybertruck, and even a purpose to be used as an autonomous taxi alongside the Cybercab. But the project is officially suspended. Elon Musk himself, in October 2023, described this car as “cool” and “beautiful”, but above all utilitarian. “It’s not designed to awe you, but to take you from point A to point B.”, he explained.

A simple, practical, and affordable car, without any revolutionary pretension. So why not transform the existing model? Tesla has decided to make a minimalist adaptation of the Model Y. With the arrival of the new model, production lines are running at full capacity and could be used to offer a “Low Cost” version of the Model Y.

A lightened Tesla Model Y for a reduced price

In France, the entry price of the Model Y has previously reached 36,900 euros. A significant reduction could be achieved by limiting certain equipment and simplifying the design. No more ventilated seats, sophisticated electric adjustments, or induction chargers. The panoramic roof could be replaced with a metal sheet, eliminating the cost of glass and insulation. On the technology side, matrix headlights, Autopilot, the passenger screen, and other expensive options would be discarded.

But that’s still not enough, and the battery could also be re-evaluated. The current Propulsion offers 500 km of range, but for an economical version, a smaller capacity would suffice. Tesla could turn to BYD or CATL to acquire older generation batteries, which are less expensive, like those used on the BYD Atto 3, with a charging power limited to 82 kW. A more modest range would be offset by substantial savings, just like an engine tuned to eco mode with a top speed limited to 150 km/h and a 0 to 100 km/h time of 10 seconds.

By lightening the vehicle and reducing the battery size, efficiency would be gained, allowing for 18-inch wheels and standard tires, which are much cheaper.

With these simplifications, the dream of a 25,000 euros Tesla could very well become a reality. A “Low Cost” version of the Model Y would offer an accessible alternative, ideal for a public seeking a practical vehicle without frills.
