Shimano unveils a battery-free automatic gear shifting system designed for a wide range of bikes.

Shimano continues to shake up the cycling world. With its new Q’Auto system, the famous Japanese manufacturer offers a revolutionary automatic transmission: no battery, no cables. This innovation targets urban, trekking, and gravel bikes, far beyond the high-end electric mountain bikes for which the Di2 technology was originally designed.

The secret of Q’Auto? It powers itself, like a dynamo. With each pedal stroke, kinetic energy is converted into electricity, powering an intelligent system that adjusts the gears in real time. Three sensors—speed, cadence, and incline—collect data to provide the right gear at the right moment, without any cyclist intervention.

With such technology, gone are the days of forgetting to recharge and manual adjustments. Even better, the Q’Auto learns from the cyclist’s behavior to anticipate their needs. This promise of smoother, effortless pedaling makes cycling more accessible to everyone.

Designed for easy integration, the system is based on the new Freehub Cues FH-U6060 rear hub, which houses the dynamo and sensors. The Cues RD-U8050 derailleur and the wireless SW-EN605-R shifter complete the setup. Compatible with other Shimano wireless Di2 components, they cover all configurations, from straight handlebars to drop bars.

Unveiled ahead of Eurobike 2025, the Q’Auto could appeal to a wide audience, from daily commuters to weekend adventurers. A new testament to Shimano’s mastery in the art of reinventing the bicycle.
