The most ridiculous recall of the year is by Mercedes.

The Mercedes AMG One is an exclusive hypercar in every way. Whether it be performance or technical issues!

One might have thought that a vehicle as accomplished as the Mercedes AMG One, the result of five years of development and a concentration of technology derived from Formula 1, would be above ordinary troubles. But it seems that even hypercars costing over two million euros are not immune to a rather mundane detail.

Indeed, Mercedes-Benz has just recalled 80% of its AMG One units out of the 275 produced. The reason? No, it’s not the V6 1.6 turbo hybrid borrowed from F1, nor its four electric motors. It’s not even any software defect or an electronic whim. This recall is due… to a few missing retaining pins.

More specifically, there are missing retaining pins on the hydraulic system of the active rear spoiler. An oversight that, in this context, is not simply trivial as it could lead to a hydraulic fluid leak that may spread onto the exhausts and cause a fire. A concerning prospect, even for thrill-seekers.

Return of Flame

The corrective action involves inspecting the affected vehicles and installing the missing pins if necessary. An operation of absolute triviality that will take about 90 minutes. Nothing insurmountable, therefore, for a car that requires a choreography of buttons and systems to synchronize just to start.

While two AMG Ones have already fallen prey to flames, the link to this specific defect has not been established, it is cautiously noted at Mercedes. No fire has so far been directly caused by this hydraulic leak. A fortunate occurrence, undoubtedly. But in the refined and ultra-demanding world of hypercars, even the smallest oversight can become a topic for biting irony.

This matter remains a testament to an eternal truth, that of a one-cent piece immobilizing a multi-million-dollar technological jewel.
