Funny World Where a Jeep Boasts About Being Aerodynamic

This is a time when we discover that Jeep, the legendary brand of off-roading and wide open spaces, now celebrates aerodynamics.

Gone are the days of Jeep boasting about off-road capabilities or brute power, welcome to a world where it’s aerodynamic drag that rules. In this new post-CO₂ era, angles become rounded, undercarriages turn flat like surfboards, and grilles close automatically. All of this to gain a few extra kilometers of range.

The new Jeep Compass is the perfect illustration of this. True to its robust silhouette, it would nevertheless be the most aerodynamic Jeep ever designed. A SUV sculpted for the wind, as its slogan highlights: She’s like the wind. One could almost think it’s an advertisement for an Italian roadster. And yet, it is indeed an SUV from the American brand that boasts a drag coefficient (Cx) of less than 0.29, featuring sharp edges to channel air, active grille shutters, and even a completely streamlined underbody. These are refinements that would have once been reserved for a racing sedan.

But Jeep is right!

But in this new world, all of this makes sense. Because it’s no longer about conquering the dunes of Omaha Beach or Lingreville, but about maximizing the announced electric range of up to 650 km for the fully electric version. Even the hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions benefit from these efficiency gains. Freedom according to Jeep, now means fewer charging stops, and more kilometers covered in silence.

The brand that once proclaimed “Go anywhere” now adds “…but as far as possible, with minimal drag.” The shift is radical, but very much in tune with today’s times. And while the off-roading aspect becomes discreet, it remains at the heart of the Compass’s DNA. Simply put, in the age of electric vehicles, adventure begins with a good Cx.
