The competition department of Mercedes has unveiled the AMG GT2 Edition W16, a creature with 830 forbidden horsepower.

There are cars made for driving, and then there are cars made to be purchased by people who have too much money to know what to do with it. The new Mercedes-AMG GT2 Edition W16 falls into the latter category. With 830 horsepower, a power-to-weight ratio that would make a fighter jet blush, and a price that will make you laugh, this monster is primarily a demonstration of marketing strength: it is not street legal. Yes, you read that right. You cannot go buy your baguette with it.

Mercedes proudly announces it: this is the most powerful car from its Customer Racing (Client Competition) division in history. Translation: the car you can buy if you are a very special (and very wealthy) client, but which you can only drive on a racetrack. No license plates, no regular auto insurance. In short, it’s a supercar that will stay cozy in a climate-controlled garage half the time, before being taken out for a “track day” where its owner will sweat in a fireproof suit.

With the Standard Model Y, Tesla does not fix any of its problems

Under the hood, we find the famed AMG 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, pushed to 830 horsepower thanks to new turbos and reprogrammed electronics. And when you press the Push2Pass button, the car unleashes an additional 100 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque. The result: a total torque of 1,000 Nm and a power-to-weight ratio of 1.7 kg/hp. Enough to shatter lap times.

An F1 disguised as a GT

The GT2 Edition W16 heavily draws its references from F1. The announcement emphasizes: optimized aerodynamics with an enlarged diffuser, wind-tunnel-tested mirrors, and especially the famous DRS. Yes, just like in Formula 1, a magic button flips the rear wing to gain a few more km/h in straight-line speed. Result: over 320 km/h at top speed. Let’s just say, aside from frightening pigeons at Le Mans or Spa, you won’t be able to test this anywhere else.

And since it needs to flatter collectors, Mercedes has brought out the paintbrushes: a painted star motif runs along the rear flanks, complemented by emerald green touches in the colors of the oil company PETRONAS. In short, an F1 disguise for billionaires seeking thrills.

Inside, there’s no flashy luxury but carbon everywhere and a redesigned steering wheel. The highlight? The door sills are signed by Kimi Antonelli, the Italian prodigy of Mercedes, already touted as the future Lewis Hamilton (now he just has to prove it…). Thanks to his signature, you can proudly say that your GT2 Edition W16 is “sponsored by an F1 driver.” In reality, it’s just a nice way to justify the outrageous price.

Nearly one million euros including tax!

There’s nothing that justifies a base price of 679,000 euros excluding tax, but the customers aren’t being extorted either, so… Each unit proudly bears a plaque “1 of 30.” As if the mere fact that production is limited wasn’t already obvious enough.

To top it all off: delivery won’t take place at a regular dealership. No, no. Happy buyers will be treated to an exclusive ceremony at a European racetrack, complete with a technical briefing, driving sessions, and VIP meet-and-greets with members of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team. And to ensure the experience is complete, each car will be delivered with its personalized cover, as well as an OMP and BELL package: a racing suit and helmet matching those of the F1 team. That way, even if you end up in the gravel after three turns, you’ll at least look the part.
