Tesla and the Temptation of the Monospace?
Elon Musk raises suspicion by suggesting that a large family vehicle is in development.
Tesla revealed the Robovan concept at its “We, Robot” event in October. Despite its name, it is not a model intended for families but rather a mass transportation vehicle for people and goods. And, of course, fully autonomous. If a photo gave a bit of hope for a consumer version, it won’t be the main seller if it is ever commercialized.
Currently, families have the choice within Tesla’s lineup between the Model X and Y. The Model X offers three rows of seats and enough space to comfortably seat seven passengers. But at 100,000 euros, it is also the most expensive Tesla model in the catalog! The Model Y also has a seven-seat configuration, but its third row is an auxiliary solution to fit two children, certainly not adults. There is therefore room for a reasonably priced model aimed at large families.
Elon Musk himself has opened the door to such a vehicle with several short comments on X, his social network. But each time, referencing the Robovan, the window of opportunity seems quite limited, at least in the short term. Between the launch of the Model Y Juniper, the development of the Robotaxi, and the elusive Model 2 under 25,000 euros, it’s clear that there is no shortage of work. So why spread out into a niche segment?
