Skoda Enyaq RS Race

Lower, wider and lighter: Škoda Motorsport is developing a concept electric car based on the Škoda Enyaq Coupé vRS.

We often wonder about the weight impact of comfort features in a modern car, especially in an electric vehicle where the mass is now flirting with (or exceeding) 2 tons for even the slightest SUV. Skoda provides an answer with its stripped down Enyaq RS Race: -316 kg compared to the Skoda Enyaq Coupé vRS from which it is derived.

To achieve this, the Czech manufacturer has resorted to new ultra-light body panels that could foreshadow our future mass-produced cars. Because that is indeed the goal of this communication that mixes family vehicle and rally. A discipline where Skoda has been successfully involved for decades.

The Enyaq RS Race features visual and technical improvements, including a wider and lower chassis, redesigned bumpers, enhanced shock absorbers, and a roll cage. Initiated in 2023, its development resulted in a fully electric “rally” vehicle lowered by 70 mm, widened by 72 mm at the front and… 116 mm at the rear!

Suspension, brakes, bucket seats, everything is borrowed from the racing world, resulting in a truly appealing finish.

Biocomposite Parts: Reducing Weight and Improving Durability

To reduce weight compared to the production model, engineers from Škoda Motorsport utilized innovative and sustainable materials by removing all unnecessary components for the intended use of the car. Additionally, lightweight polycarbonate side and rear windows have been incorporated. These lightweight materials are also applied inside, such as on the dashboard, door panels, and footrests for the driver and passenger. Moreover, the panoramic glass roof of the standard model has been replaced by a biocomposite panel.

A total of 16 vehicle components are made from sustainable materials, with natural linen fibers replacing carbon both inside and out. These woven fibers not only reduce vibrations inside and contribute to weight reduction, but they also serve as visually appealing design elements. Furthermore, the fibers are mechanically processed rather than chemically, and the cultivation of linen has a far lower environmental impact than other crops.

Amazing Performance!

The four 20-inch wheels are still responsible for transmitting the reasonable power of the production model, namely 250 kW or 340 horsepower. The energy is still stored in the standard battery, also rated at 82 kWh (gross, 77 kWh net), while the top speed remains limited to 180 km/h. Finally, the acceleration to 100 km/h is now under 5 seconds, whereas the production model (priced at €65,480) requires 5.4 seconds.

A last detail, though truly unnecessary: this Enyaq RS Race includes a sound generator that mimics the noise of thermal vehicles. Well, that’s just wasted weight…
