Hyundai Unveils Its XXL Electric IONIQ 9
We keep hearing that space is the new luxury in the electric automotive world. Here is Hyundai’s vision of it.
Hyundai today unveils the IONIQ 9, a fully electric three-row SUV with an immense interior space that blends a distinctive yet very Hyundai design with cutting-edge electric technology. Before its grand European reveal tonight, the IONIQ 9 was unveiled at the iconic Goldstein House in Los Angeles, a renowned example of mid-century modern architecture. A fitting symbol for a vehicle that some may find divisive but which certainly leaves an impression.

The IONIQ 9 offers superior habitability with spacious second and third rows, truly a lounge on wheels. The panoramic sunroof and the relatively low side window beltline hint at optimal brightness, creating a sense of space and comfort for passengers. For a stark contrast, hop into a first-generation Audi Q8 one day, and you’ll understand that claustrophobia is hardly compatible with onboard comfort!
A Lounge on Wheels
Continuing with this wellness philosophy onboard, the flat floor of the IONIQ 9 can accommodate six or seven occupants. In a six-seat configuration, the relaxation seats in the first and second rows can fully recline and offer a footrest for optimal comfort, allowing up to four people to rest during the vehicle’s recharge. The large SUV is equipped with relaxing seats with massage functions that use pressure and vibrations to stimulate blood flow and circulation, thus reducing fatigue on long trips. The IONIQ 9 also boasts a headroom clearance of 1,899 mm and 2,050 mm for legs when the second and third rows are combined.

With the third-row seats folded flat, the trunk can hold up to 1,323 liters of luggage, while with all three rows in use, the IONIQ 9 offers 620 liters of cargo space. The front trunk (Frunk) provides an additional 88 liters for two-wheel-drive versions and 52 liters in all-wheel drive models.
The 110.3 kWh lithium-ion NCM battery provides a maximum all-electric range of 620 km in WLTP cycle and a rather reasonable energy consumption of 19.4 kWh/km for such a large vehicle. The IONIQ 9 can recharge from 10% to 80% in just 24 minutes using a 350 kW charger.

The high-range rear-wheel drive model is powered by a 160 kW rear motor. An additional 70 kW front motor supports the long-range all-wheel-drive version, while the Performance all-wheel-drive model receives two 160 kW motors, at the front and rear. Tesla has inspired many. However, we will have to wait a few more days to know its prices…
