BMW Sends Mixed Signals on Its Electric Future

BMW continues to carve its path toward an ambitious and innovative electric future, from the Arctic Circle to the desert

At BMW, it truly takes a heartless person to subject innocent cars to such trials… After facing the polar temperatures of the Arctic Circle in Sweden, BMW sends its models under the blazing sun of the South African desert. But behind this apparent mistreatment lies a relentless quest for excellence for its future electric stars: the i3 and iX3. These intense tests, although tough on the vehicles, are more than necessary.

These two models, developed on the revolutionary Neue Klasse platform, represent a major advancement in electromobility. With spectacular gains in range, charging speed, and onboard technology, the i3 and iX3 usher in a new era for the Bavarian brand.

The iX3 will be the first to enter production by the end of the year, followed by the i3 sedan in early 2026. These vehicles are based on an 800V electric architecture, allowing a 30% reduction in charging times and nearly 30% increased range. Additionally, the sixth-generation cylindrical NMC batteries, 20% denser in energy, help lower costs while improving performance.

To ensure these innovations meet customer expectations, BMW tests its vehicles in the most extreme environments. In South Africa, the iX3 was tested under rigorous desert conditions, evaluating its thermal performance and durability. Meanwhile, the i3 demonstrated agility and reliability on icy surfaces in Sweden, confirming its ability to withstand the harshest climates.

BMW Brings a Little Joy to Its Strict Neue Klasse Concepts

The i3 and iX3 benefit from the “Heart of Joy” system, a central unit integrating four cutting-edge processors offering computing power 20 times greater than current models. This innovation not only enhances connectivity but also driving dynamics and energy efficiency.

In terms of design, both models mark a turning point with redesigned lines combining sporty elegance and advanced technologies, such as the new ADAS systems integrated into the iconic grille.

BMW appears ready to revolutionize the electric driving experience. For example, the i4 2024 already offers an EPA range of 485 km and rapid charging from 10 to 80% in 31 minutes. The i3 and iX3, based on the Neue Klasse, are expected to surpass these performances, promising a revolution for users. Their launch is imminent, with an official presentation planned in the coming months.
