BYD mythes voiture électrique

Did you know that one in 10 people thinks it is dangerous to take an electric car to a car wash?

This misconception is just one of many revealed by a survey conducted by BYD UK, the very dynamic British branch of the Chinese electric vehicle leader. It is time to dispel these myths and accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility.

Thanks to a survey of 2,000 people conducted via OnePoll, BYD identified the most common misconceptions about electric cars. Steve Beattie, Sales and Marketing Director of BYD UK, addresses these misconceptions one by one.

1. You can’t move your charging station (18%)
Steve clarifies: “Although fixed at home, charging stations can be uninstalled and reinstalled by professionals. Certainly, this comes at a cost, but it’s an option often unknown.”

2. Electric cars could be manual (17%)
They could be, but that would serve no purpose. Thanks to the immediate torque of electric motors, EVs are essentially automatic, with no clutch or gearbox. Their simplicity makes them easier and more enjoyable to drive. The absence of a gearbox also reduces weight and the risk of breakdown.

3. EVs can’t drive in water (14%)
“Thanks to strict safety standards, EVs handle water without issues, whether it’s puddles or rain,” reassures Steve.

4. EVs last shorter than traditional cars (13%)
With fewer moving parts, EVs wear out less. The extended warranties of up to 8 years offered by most manufacturers, from BYD to Tesla and Peugeot, testify to this.

5. EVs recharge themselves while driving (13%)
No, that would be too easy. But regenerative braking captures energy, extending range without replacing a full charge.

6. EVs can’t be towed (11%)
Towing is possible when following appropriate methods, such as using a flatbed. It is true, however, that it is more challenging to tow an electric vehicle due to the parking brakes often placed on both axles to protect the powertrains.

7. EVs can’t handle water washing (10%)
False and utterly false! Electric cars are designed to withstand water, even in a car wash. They are actually less prone to water issues than traditional vehicles, for which water infiltration into the air intake system can be catastrophic.

An interesting fact that emerged from this survey is that younger generations are more likely to believe these myths, while 89% of those over 55 completely reject them. Experience does have its advantages!
